Upper West Region Embraces National Gun Amnesty Initiative: A Call to Silence the Guns for Our Safety

In a bid to address the rising menace of gun-related violence in the country, the Upper West Region is set to champion the implementation of the National Gun Amnesty Initiative. Led by the Honorable Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, Esq., the region is gearing up for the official launch of this groundbreaking security initiative on Tuesday, 11th November 2025.

Addressing the media and key stakeholders at a meeting held at the Wa Municipal Assembly Hall in Wa, the Honorable Minister highlighted the alarming statistics of gun-related incidents plaguing the nation. With figures revealing armed robbery, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms, it is evident that urgent action is needed to curb this growing threat to peace and security.

The Gun Amnesty Initiative, slated to run for six weeks, presents a unique opportunity for citizens to voluntarily surrender illicit or unregistered firearms without the fear of arrest or prosecution. The overarching goal of this initiative is to reduce the proliferation of illegal firearms, encourage lawful registration, and ultimately strengthen national and community-level security.

Drawing on the pillars of communication and outreach, logistics and operations, and monitoring and follow-up, the Honorable Minister outlined the comprehensive strategy for the successful execution of the initiative. With designated surrender points across District Assemblies and coordinated enforcement measures post-amnesty, the government is poised to make significant strides in disarming communities and enhancing public safety.

Crucially, the Honorable Minister emphasized the pivotal role of the media in driving public understanding and participation in the Gun Amnesty Initiative. Recognizing the far-reaching influence of the media, he called on journalists to utilize their platforms to educate, sensitize, and mobilize citizens towards peaceful disarmament.

Furthermore, the Honorable Minister underscored the importance of empathy, transparency, and consistent messaging in engaging the public on the benefits of the amnesty. By fostering a sense of collective responsibility and community peace, the government aims to instill a culture of safety and security in every Ghanaian home.

As the Upper West Region prepares to set the stage for the official launch of the Gun Amnesty Initiative, the call to “silence the guns for our safety” resonates strongly across the region. With a united front and a shared vision of a gun-free society, the region stands poised to lead by example and uphold the principles of peace and security that define Ghana.

In conclusion, let us heed the rallying cry to “silence the guns, for our safety, for our children’s future, and for the continued peace and prosperity of our beloved homeland.” Through collective action and unwavering commitment, we can make Ghana a nation where every citizen can live without the specter of gun violence.

May this initiative mark a milestone in our journey towards a safer and more secure Ghana. Guns Down, Ghana Up.
