MTN GHANA ENGAGES UPPER WEST REGIONAL MINISTER HON. CHARLES LWANGA PUOZUING ESQ ON DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

In a bid to strengthen its partnership with the Government of Ghana and the Upper West Region, MTN Ghana recently paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq, the Regional Minister. The meeting, held on 23rd October 2025, highlighted MTN’s commitment to supporting national growth and socio-economic development in Ghana.

During the interaction, MTN Ghana reiterated its fiscal contribution to the country, noting that in 2024 alone, the company paid a total of GHS 8.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes to the Government of Ghana. Additionally, MTN made significant payments in fees, levies, and other statutory contributions, amounting to GHS 468.4 million. These financial contributions, representing over 50% of MTN’s total revenue, underscore the company’s dedication to supporting the national economy.

MTN Ghana also outlined its ongoing network investments, with a focus on improving network coverage and quality of service. The company disclosed that it has achieved impressive network coverage percentages in Ghana, including 97.79% for 4G, 98.9% for 3G, and 99.31% for 2G. Furthermore, MTN announced plans to invest $200 million in network quality improvement this year and a total of $1 billion in network infrastructure by the end of 2025.

In support of the Government’s digital transformation agenda, MTN Ghana highlighted its participation in key initiatives such as the “One Million Coders Program,” aimed at enhancing digital skills training for Ghanaian youth. The company has committed USD $2 million to this flagship project, aligning with its efforts to promote digital inclusion and innovation in the country.

The meeting also underscored MTN’s commitment to supporting education and empowerment programs in the Upper West Region and beyond. Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, the company has implemented various projects in education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and community support. Notable initiatives include the Bright Scholarship Scheme, which has awarded scholarships to 400 students, including 60 beneficiaries from the Upper West Region.

Beyond these initiatives, MTN Ghana continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to community development in the Upper West Region. The company has provided financial support of GHS 2 million to the Ministry of Communications towards the Upper West Regional Girls in ICT initiative, empowering young girls with essential digital skills for the future. This year, MTN Ghana donated medical equipment valued at GHS 442,570 to the Lawra Government Hospital to help boost healthcare delivery in the Upper West Region. In addition, the company continues to offer annual support to some traditional festivals across the region, such as the Kobine Festival in Lawra and the Dumba Festival in Wa, helping to preserve culture, promote unity, and strengthen the  communities. These interventions underscore MTN’s continued investment in improving lives and promoting cultural pride across the region.

Addressing key challenges facing the business in the region, MTN Ghana sought the Regional Minister’s support in combating MoMo fraud and addressing issues of fibre cuts and chamber cover theft. The company emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Council to address these challenges effectively.

In his response, the Honourable Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq commended MTN Ghana for its impactful work in the region and assured the company of his support for future development initiatives. The Regional Minister pledged to collaborate with MTN Ghana to improve network services, combat mobile money fraud, and address infrastructure challenges, including fibre cuts.

The engagement between MTN Ghana and the Upper West Regional Minister highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in driving socio-economic development in Ghana. Both parties have reaffirmed their commitment to working together towards a more prosperous and digitally inclusive future for the Upper West Region and the nation as a whole.
