GUNS DOWN, GHANA UP: A SUCCESSFUL SEMINAR ON GUN AMNESTY IN WA

On December 19, 2025, the Upper West Region witnessed a pivotal event aimed at fostering peace and security. The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons hosted a high-level seminar on the Gun Amnesty Programme (GAP) at the Regional Coordinating Council in Wa. Over 120 participants, representing local governments, security agencies, traditional authorities, religious groups, civil society, and the media, came together to champion the initiative.
Kicking off on December 1, 2025, and running until January 15, 2026, the GAP aims to significantly reduce the circulation of illicit firearms and combat gun-related violence across the nation. Attendees were encouraged to participate actively—either by surrendering their illegal firearms or by regularising them through their nearest Police District.
The seminar was a resounding success, fostering dialogue and commitment towards a safer Ghana. Together, let’s silence the guns for our collective safety and contribute to a violence-free environment.
