Addressing Drug Abuse and Empowering Youth through Education: A Call to Action

In a thought-provoking keynote address at the Third Annual Review Conference of the Upper West Regional Chief Imam Endowment Fund, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, emphasized the urgent need to combat drug abuse and empower the youth through educational opportunities. With a theme focused on “Breaking the Chains of Drug Abuse,” the conference brought together religious leaders, traditional authorities, members of the endowment fund, and other stakeholders to address a growing societal concern.

The minister acknowledged the devastating impact of drug abuse on Ghanaian youth, highlighting the need for a multifaceted approach that combines law enforcement, education, and community engagement. He emphasized the role of education in providing young people with the skills, values, and opportunities they need to thrive, pointing to government initiatives such as the Free Senior High School Policy and STEM education reforms as critical steps in this direction.

Furthermore, the minister called on religious leaders, educators, parents, and civil society to join forces in combating drug abuse and nurturing the moral and intellectual development of young people. He highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments where those struggling with addiction can find help and encouragement, rather than shame and judgment.

Addressing the youth directly, the minister urged them to reject the lure of drugs and instead channel their energy into education, innovation, and service. He reminded them of their potential for greatness and the importance of taking responsibility for their futures.

In conclusion, the minister commended the regional chief imam and the endowment fund for their leadership in empowering youth through education and called on all stakeholders to become ambassadors of change in the fight against drug abuse. He highlighted the power of collective action and unity in creating a future of hope and progress for the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole.

As Ghana faces the challenge of drug abuse, the minister’s address serves as a rallying cry for all members of society to come together and work towards a common goal. By addressing the root causes of addiction and empowering young people through education, Ghana can build a brighter future for the next generation.
