Wa, August 4, 2026 — In a moment that will long be etched in the memory of the Upper West Region, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, today turned personal pain into public triumph with the commissioning of an expanded Dialysis Unit at the Upper West Regional Hospital.
For years, families across the region have borne the heavy burden of watching loved ones battle kidney failure with little more than hope and the punishing prospect of long, costly journeys to Accra for treatment. Today, that burden grew lighter. Through the Speaker’s personal initiative and in partnership with the Ghanaian-founded NGO, Sustainable Health Education and Interventions Limited (SHEILD), six state-of-the-art dialysis machines and recliners were donated to the facility — a gift that speaks directly to the dignity and survival of the region’s most vulnerable.
Speaking at the ceremony, Speaker Bagbin, himself a proud son of the Upper West, reminded all present that healthcare is not a privilege reserved for those who live in the capital, but a fundamental right owed to every Ghanaian, regardless of geography. He spoke movingly of the anguish of arranging emergency airlifts for dialysis patients to Accra, some of whom, tragically, did not survive the journey. It is this lived experience, he explained, that transformed a policy conversation into a mission of the heart.
“This is not a political gesture. It is an act of service,” the Speaker declared — words that captured the spirit of a project born not of ceremony, but of genuine compassion for the people he represents.
The event brought together the Upper West Parliamentary Caucus, hospital management under the leadership of Dr. Philip Baabiineh, and the dedicated dialysis team led by Dr. Abednego Attoh, all united in celebration of a shared achievement. The Speaker was clear-eyed in his charge to the hospital: the equipment must be diligently maintained, and he pledged continued support toward building the capacity of the staff who will operate it.
This expanded unit is more than new machinery — it is a lifeline. It stands as a powerful symbol of what can be achieved when leadership is matched with action, and it offers renewed hope to residents of the Upper West Region and beyond who no longer need to choose between their health and their home.
The Upper West Regional Co-ordinating Council joins the entire region in celebrating this landmark development and commends the Speaker, SHEILD, and all partners for this extraordinary gift of life. Management and staff of the Regional Hospital are encouraged to liaise closely with the Speaker’s office to ensure the facility is fully utilized — so that, indeed, no one in this region is ever again disadvantaged by geography when it comes to accessing life-saving care.
