A New Dawn for Kidney Care: Speaker Bagbin's Gift of Life to the Upper West

Published 2 min read

In a moment that will long be etched in the memory of the Upper West Region, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, turned personal pain into public triumph today by commissioning an expanded Dialysis Unit at the Upper West Regional Hospital.

For years, families across the region have borne the heavy burden of watching loved ones battle kidney failure with little more than hope and the punishing prospect of long, costly journeys to Accra for treatment. Today, that burden grew lighter. Through the Speaker's personal initiative and in partnership with the Ghanaian-founded NGO Sustainable Health Education and Interventions Limited (SHEILD), the Speaker donated six state-of-the-art dialysis machines and recliners to the facility, a gift that speaks directly to the dignity and survival of the region's most vulnerable.

Speaking at the ceremony, Speaker Bagbin, himself a proud son of the Upper West, reminded all present that healthcare is not a privilege reserved for those who live in the capital, but a fundamental right owed to every Ghanaian, regardless of geography. He spoke movingly of the anguish of arranging emergency airlifts for dialysis patients to Accra, some of whom, tragically, did not survive the journey. It is this lived experience, he explained, that transformed a policy conversation into a mission of the heart.
