\n1.0 INTRODUCTION
\nIn response to the ongoing meningitis outbreak in the Upper West Region of Ghana,
\nthe Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin,
\ndonated meningitis drugs worth GH\u00a2300,000 to support the region\u2019s healthcare
\nresponse. The donation, made on 16th February 2025 at the Regional Medical Stores,
\nwas a crucial intervention to help curb the escalating health crisis.
\n2.0 RECEPTION OFDONATION
\nThe Upper West Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Damien
\nPunguyire, received the donation and expressed profound gratitude for the timely
\nintervention. He provided an update on the outbreak, reporting:
\n\uf0b7 129suspected cases
\n\uf0b7 22confirmed cases
\n\uf0b7 16recorded deaths
\n\uf0b7 29critically ill patients
\nDr. Punguyire emphasized the urgent need for support and detailed ongoing measures
\nsuch as public education campaigns, early reporting mechanisms, and preventive
\nstrategies including avoiding overcrowding, wearing face masks, social distancing,
\nand seeking prompt medical attention.
\n3.0 SUPPORT FROMOTHERSTAKEHOLDERS
\nIn addition to the Speaker\u2019s donation, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon.
\nCharles Lwanga Puozuing Esq, acknowledged the generous support received from the
\nNational Lottery Authority, amounting to GH\u00a2100,000. He advocated for the
\nestablishment of an emergency response fund to handle future health crises effectively.
\nFurthermore, Members of Parliament from the Upper West Region pledged a
\ncollective donation of GH\u00a210,000 to bolster the health sector\u2019s response efforts. Hon.
\nBede Anwataazumo Ziedeng, representing the Parliamentary caucus, recalled a
\nsimilar outbreak in 1997 and stressed the importance of unity and collaborative efforts
\nin tackling health emergencies.
\n4.0 REMARKSBYTHESPEAKEROFPARLIAMENT
\nRight Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin expressed his satisfaction in
\ncontributing to the critical healthcare initiative. He officially handed over the essential
\nmeningitis drugs to the Regional Minister for onward distribution and emphasized the
\nimportance of health advocacy, community education, and collective action in
\npreventing the further spread of the disease.
